WhirliDogs ServSafe Academy is an inclusive class designed for typical teenagers and those with mild disabilities who are first time job seekers and wish to apply to area restaurants but may be hesitant about what is expected in a restaurant setting. WhirliDogs’ staff will offer the industry’s leading training certificate; ServSafe Food Handler. Passing this course will give the job seeker an advantage. Course material will be supplemented with some food preparation. In addition basic soft skills such as working as a team, networking to find a job and job application tips will be shared. The WhirliDogs ServSafe Academy will meet at The Wilson SPOT Youth Center, 910 Tarboro Street, Wilson, North Carolina from 10:00 – 3:00 June 8th and June 9th. The cost is $60. WhirliDogs Prep Academy is designed to introduce teenagers and young adults with moderate special needs to the language and requirements needed for safe and sanitary kitchen operations. Participants will become acquainted with commercial kitchen equipment and the sanitation steps needed to keep themselves and customers safe. Emphasis will be on safety and sanitation, following the directions of a supervisor, teamwork and effective communication. Participants will learn to prepare a dish, serve a guest, clean up after cooking and work together to accomplish a goal. Each course of the WhirliDogs Prep Academy will meet one afternoon a week at The Wilson Spot Youth Center, 910 Tarboro Street, Wilson, North Carolina from 3:30- 5:30 for four sessions. The cost is $50 per course (4 classes) per participant. Participants may apply to return for future sessions as there is always something more to learn. Classes will be limited to 6-8 participants.
